Bernice Rushin was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on April 24, 1921 to Mercie D. and Willie Alexander.

Bernice joined her husband, Clarence; sisters, Willie Mae, Gladys and Cleo; her brother, T.C. and her son Samuel in God's embrace on September 22, 2014.

Bernice became a member of Mt. Charity Missionary Baptist Church in 1961. She was a member of the Mother's Board and a diligent and devoted member of the Usher Board.

Mother Rushin was an avid gardner. She loved her plants, vegetable or flower, her pets, and the birds and cats who visited her yard. They could always count on her for seed, food, or corn bread baked just for them.

Bernice retired from the Detroit Board of Education in 1991, after more than 25 years of service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Bernice's life and memories are cherished by her daughters, Catherine and Meredes; son, Eddie; grandchildren, Gina Mercedes, Eddie, Adiah, Aaron, Dwayne and Eugene; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and relatives.
