David Lee Forts was born December 5, 1955 in Macon, Georgia, to the union of Harold Shackelford and Dorothy Lavender. He was the oldest of nine children. He moved from Georgia to Detroit, with his grandparents Gayron and Marie Forts at the age of twelve years old. He resided with his mother Dorothy and Ruel (Stepfather) Lavender. He finished his schooling with the Detroit Public Schools. He graduated from Southwestern High School.
David worked at Fabricon INC, Beam Steel INC, Chrysler, and retired from General Motors. He married Anita Lyons and they leave behind four children, David Forts, Jr, Danyal Forts, Daletha Forts, and Shanea Forts-English (Thomas), Nine grandchildren, eight siblings a host of nephews and nieces. Preceding him in death are his mother Dorothy Lavender his grandparents, Gayron Forts and Marie Forts, and cousin Tyron Miles.
