Dorothy Mae Jackson, was born November 2, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan. She was one of three children and the only daughter of Elmurry and Annie Jackson.
Her parents and brother moved to Michigan from South Carolina. Dorothy and her brother, John were born in Michigan and grew up in Delray section of southwest Detroit. After her mother became a widow in 1951, she and her children purchased a home at 1860 Electric in Southwest Detroit.
Dorothy graduated from Southwestern High School and immediately went to work for the Michigan Bell Telephone where she remained a loyal employee until her retirement after 34 years.
Like the others in her family, Dorothy was a devout Christian and loyal member of St. John AME Church. Her family has deep roots in the church. It was said the her uncle Frank Gilliam provided financial support and would leave his full time job to come in the evenings and work on the church. Her mother, Annie Jackson was a Stewardess, the Tresurer, and active member. Her brother, John Jackson was the Choral Ensemble Choir Director as well as a member of the Senior Choir. Dorothy enjoyed music and learned to read music and play the piano at an early age. She also sanf in the Choir at st. John and in her later years occasionally played the piano for services.
Dorothy met and married Robert Lee Hall, Sr. in 1955. To this union, Dorothy and Robert brought three children, Lauren Ann Hann (Donald Tate), Susan Annette Hall (Gary Hardwick)and Robert Lee Hall, Jr. (Kimberly Sorrell), Robert and Dorothy divorced in 1966 and Dorothy returned to live with her mother and brother, John.
Dorothy remarried to Carnell Wiley Flake on August 8, 1975. After they retired, they moved to Pulaski, Illinois to enjoy a quiet and happy life. They returned Detroit, Michiganh in 2001.
Dorothy's greatest joy came from her grandchildren. Damon Austin Tate is a musician and student and Joshua Alexander Tate, also a student. Bailey Alexander Hardwick graduated from St. Mary's College of California in 2013. Skylar Corine Hall is a student at Cass Technical High School. Kennedy Christine Hall is a student at University Preparatory Science and Math Middle School. McKenna Marie hall was returned to God at the tender age of 4 years. Averie Grace Hall is a bright and precious 4 year-old and the precious baby boy Robert Gordon Hall is 2.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Elmurry and Annie Jackson, Her brothers, Floyd and John, her two husbands, Robert Lee Hall, Sr. and Wiley Carnell Flake, her sister-in-law Carrie Jones, her son-in-law, Donald Tate, and her beloved granddaughter, Euphemia Jean Hollis.
She is survived by her three children, 2 step-children, Wiley Flake and Shiela Flake, seven grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, and many other loving relatives and friends.
