Fred B. Holmes, Jr, was born to the union of the late Fred B. Holmes, Sr. and Lina Louise Rushing-Holmes on May 21, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the third oldest and first born son of 13 brothers and sisters. Mark, Anthony, Kim and Timothy Holmes preceded him in death.

Fred was baptised at St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he also served as an alter boy. Fred, nicknam "Dunie," loved to dance. He performed in numerous talent shows at the Wigle Center and Michigan Bell.

In 1968, he graduated from Murray Wright High School. Shortly after, he was drafted and appointed private first class in the United States Marine Corps, where he fought in the Vietnam War.
During his active service, he was hit by a land mine and laid wounded in the bush for two weeks before anyone found him.
Corporal Fred B. Holmes, Jr. received an honorable discharge, a Purple Heart, a Combat Action Ribbon, a National Defense Service Medal, and a Vietnamese Service Medal.
Fred was employed by the Ford Motor Company. After his health started to decline, he retired after 28 years of service.
Fred made his transition on January 23, 2012 at Viba Nursing Facility.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his five sisters, Carolyn Huff of Jacksonville, Fl, Jennifer Henderson, Ena Holmes, Joshlyn Holmes and and Ursula Holmes, all from Detroit, MI; three brothers, Eric Bennett and Efrem Holmes, all from Detroit, MI; one son Leaman Jones; two aunts, Lula Mae Ervin of Cleveland, Ohio and Margaret Holmes of Rochester, NY; one uncle, Edward Johnson of Gardenia, CA and a host of nieces, nephews, acousins and a lifelong friends.
