John Allen Freeman Jr. was born August 1,1947 to the union of John Allen Freeman and Vivian Blow in Portsmouth, Virginia of which both preceded him in his death. He attended I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia wherer he was known as "Cool John". He was a local hero and basketball idol in his hometown of Portsmouth. John loved basketball and was an avid sports fan. Because John had a love for carpentry he became a master craftsman. He was a devoted member of Fews Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church where he was an Usher and Boy Scout Leader.
John was drafted to the United States Army immediately after high school. He is veteran of the Vietnam War, wherer he earned several medals, includung the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. After John was honorably discharged from the Army he began working at General Motors. He worked at GM for 31 years as a Machine Operator before he retired.
John met the love of his life, Bertha whom he affectionately called "Honey". John and Bertha were married on November 18,1971. John loved vacationing with Bertha, spending time at the church, and traveling back home to Portsmouth to visit his family who referred to John as "Baby Allen".
John was also preceded in death by: two of his brothers, Frankie Freeman and Jeffrey Freeman. John leaves to forever cherish his memory: his life partner and loving wife of 43 years, Bertha Freeman; two brothers, Wendell Freeman of Maryland and Marvin Freeman (Deborah) of Roanoke, Virginia; and two sisters, Angela McCants (Edward) of Portsmouth and Charlette Freeman of Suffolk, Virginia; a very special brother-in-law, Charles Gardner Sr. (Florence), many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and countless other relatives, friends, and church members.
