Obituary

Vistation Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from 1PM until 8PM at Stinson Funeral Home Southwest Chapel located at 1939 South Fort Street Detroit, Michigan 48217. Funeral Service will be Thursday May 2, 2013 at Union Second Baptist Church 459 Beechwood Street River Rouge, Michigan 48218 Service is 11:00AM. Final Disposition is at Woodmere Cemetery.

Juanita Elizabeth Davis-Carter was born on September 10, 1919 in Chattahoochee, FL. to the union of the late George and Amanda Davis. she was the sixth of eleven children she found Christ at a early age and was baptized at Oak Grove AME church in Chattahoochee, FL. there she was active in the choir and Sunday School.

Education was always paramount to Juanita. she attended the Florida Oak Grove School system and graduated fro stevens High school in 1939. She continued her education at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL. After completing two years of college study, due to finances she pursued a different path. Juanita saw the need to broaden her horizons enrolling in cosmetology school. She received her Cosmetology degree in 1942. She the owner and proprietor of a beauty salon in Quincy, FL.

Juanita met and married the late Corporal Edward B. Carter of Greenville, SC. in 1944. In 1945, they moved to Detroit, Mi. To this union, one child was born, a daughter, Ellen Denise. They were married for 31 years until his death in 1975. Juanita continued practicing cosmetology until retirement in 1990.

Juanita was active in her community, serving on the Detroit Election Board as a poll worker for many years and a member of the River Rouge seniors' club No. 2. Though raised as a Methodist, following her husband, she joined Union Second Baptist Church in 1955 under the leadership of Pastor Welton T. Smith, III, she continued as choir member and served in the Mission Department and attended Sunday school regularly. During the leadership of Pastor Kenneth L. Brown, her health declined.

Juanita was most known to family and friends as a fabulous cook, moreover a "baker"; her three layer Coconut Cakes were most enjoyed by all.

She departed this life on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Juanita leaves to mourn her loss and cherish her memory: a daughter; Ellen Denise Carter, granddaughter; Nikki Scherae Carter, Detroit, MI; two sisters, Cleola Cunningham, Detroit,MI and Lillie Mae Scott, Detroit, MI; a special cousin, Dorothy M. Odom, Detroit, MI; and a special niece, Gwenevere Elaine Bluitt, Detroit,MI. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends.
