HER STORY
Velma Lee Broome born February 22, 1921 to the late Zack and Edna Broome. She was the 6th of eleven chikdren. Velma was a win and her sister was Elma Broome-King who preceded her in death on September 2, 2013. Of ten siblings, Zack "Buddy" Jr., Atha Mae, Cora Bell, Alma, Sally, Elma, John L., Cleveland, and rose Ella, they all preceded her in death.
Velma was educated in the Copiah County Schools of Mississippi and married John Peyton. To this union three children were born, Janet, Lee, and Gladys, who preceded her in death, as well as her husband John.
Velma confessed Christ at an early age and joined Shiloh M.B. Church in the early 1950's under the leadership of the late Rev. Roy Faulkner. She then served faithfully, as an usher, for more that forty years under the pastorate of the late Rev. Gordan A. Humphrey, Sr. at Shiloh M.B. Church.
Velma also in later years married Edward Paige who also preceded her in death. She worked for over thirty years for Dr. Rubin, a psychiatrist, who later retired and moved back to France, his home country during 1990.
Velma enjoyed many things, especially keeping up with her family, teaching many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren how to drive cars, having summer cookouts, and planning Thanksgiving dinner for her family. Velma traveled a lot with the ushers, in and out of town, as well as going on numerous cruises with her daughter, Janet and friends in Detroit, Michigan.
Velma's kindness, her love, her true friendship, and that strong determinnation with a will to go all the way, will truly be missed by all those who knew her and were blessed to spend time with her.
Velma quietly slipped away Sunday, October 26, 2014 around 5 a.m. with her son and daughter by her bedside. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Janet (Bobby); her son, Lee (Ann); her brother, Eugene; grenddaughter, Joanne; grandsons, Charles (Tressa), Lee Jr., Leonard (Marita), Willie "Bossman;" great-granddaughters, Whitley and Morgan; great-grandson, Charles; brother-in-law, Rev Bennie Gaston, Pastor, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, in Zion, Illinois and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a long-time friend, Mr. Jesse Sturdivant and two very special nieces, Emma and Ruby
