Vera Alice Reid Rucker was born February 28, 1941 to Inez Morris and Mose Davis, in Griffin, GA where she spent the first 16 years of her life. During this time she enjoyed growing up in a large, loving family environment. Vera loved spending time with her aunts and uncles, sister, cousins; male and female, just the same. In July of 1956 Vera, her sister Rebecca, Grandmother Vera Reid and mother Inez Morris, both who preceded her in death moved to Detroit.
Vera's love for the Lord started as a child in St. Stephens Episcopal Church of Griffin, GA. After moving to Detroit, MI, she joined St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church where she became an active and faithful member who sat on numerous guilds and community programs. Vera A. graduated from Central High School in Detroit. After graduation, she returned to Georgia and married childhood sweetheart that she loved from the 5th grade, whom Vera vowed to pay "one million dollars" to buy him if she needed, John T. Rucker in 1962. Four children were born to their union which lasted 53 years ending only with her departure on July 29, 2015.
Vera held many jobs and titles along with raising her children. Starting up an early morning latch-key and managing McDonalds were two of her and the family's favorites. In all her jobs, she took her caring and loving personality. Vera met no strangers and her love of the Lord showed in all her actions and words of encouragement. Her passion for loving all children was cultivated even more after her youngest daughter Melody was killed. She then helped form the organization SOSAD (Save Our Sons and Daughters), and worked many years, on a national level, to keep kids from killing kids, counseling families, and teaching conflict resolution to resolve disputes. In 1989, Vera was named "Michigan Mother of the Year," by the American Mother's Association.
Vera loved a multitude of things. She was a pillar of the community and exemplified WOMANHOOD to the fullest. Vera loved spending time with her family telling stories, laughing and cooking her famous friend chicken. Vera welcomed everyone with open arms. He home was even called the "community house." She would often walk around the house singing and praising the Lord. Every choir rehearsal ministered to her as she sang. She loved spending time with her grandchildren ensuring their spiritual foundation and love for family. Vera loved the Lord, her family, her pastor, her church and the choir.
On Thursday, July 30, 2015, the Lord called Vera to eternal life. Her daughter Melod DeShawn Rucker preceded her in death. Vera leaves to cherish in her memory, husband John T. Rucker Sr., Sister Rebecca Morris; children Penelope Michelle Vaughn, John T. Rucker Jr., and Samuel Anthony Rucker (Tanika); extended children Dion Brogdon, Andre Garner, Annette Garner Whitfield, Nicole Garner, Marlon Neal, Krystal Vincent Robinson, Althoris (Peb) Strong; grandchildren Nathaniel (Jay) Vaughn Jr., Antonio John DeShawn Vaughn, Melody Malaya Glynn, Devonta Brogdon, Daylen Brogdon, Shyla Elizabeth Rucker, Rebecca Brittany Rucker, Skye Renee Rucker; Great grandchild Antonio DeShawn Vaughn Jr.; many adopted children, grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors, and church members who loved her dearly.
