He eagerly delivered papers to his customers on his early morning daily route while making sure he always arrived for school on time. His determination and dedication was acknowledged when he received an award for being the number one paperboy in his area! Walter also found time to participate in both cub Scouts and Boy Scouts which most assuredly were instrumental in helping to develop his willingness to always to always help and assist others; character qualities that those who knew him grew to love and appreciate. Walter was a very talented artist; and he was proud to have had the opportunity to work with famous local artist to assist with the painting of a mural in downtown Cleveland.
From a very early age, Walter expressed an interest and love for sports and his natural talent afforded him the opportunity to play on various little league and high school basketball teams.
As he grew older he nurtured his affinity for knowledge and enjoyed worked at the Cleveland Public Library throughout his high school years. WALTER accepted Christ at an early age and attended Everlasting Baptist Church where he was baptized.
Walter continued to hone his strong work ethic and strived for academic excellence while also playing sports. Upon graduation from Glenville High School in 1969. Walter became the first African American student to receive a four year baseball scholarship to Kent State university (KSU). Walter played baseball, while majoring in Architecture at KSU where he also became a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Epsilon Delta Chapter.
As fate would have it, while playing a game of pool in KSU student union- Walter met the love of his life, Cassandra Lee Robinson in 1969. He looked up and there she was-standing right in front of him-and that was the beginning of a beautiful love story lasting 44 years.
Walter and Cassandra were married on June 26, 1971 and they later moved to Detroit, Michigan where Walter attended the University of Detroit Mercy where he majored in Business Administration and minored in Accounting. To this beautiful union, Walter and Cassandra eagerly welcomed the birth of their first child Eric Hubert in 1972.
