Willie Alice Lewis was born July 4, 1923, to the union of the late
Rev. Rayford Kaylup and Mary Magekine Lawson.
Willie Alice was educated in San Antonio, Texas at Wheatley High School.
In 1940's, Willie Alice met James L. Lewis Sr, and on September 2, 1948 they were joined in holy matrimony. From this union, five children were born; two sons and three daughters.
In 1943, the family relocated to Detroit, Michigan, where Willie Alice was a homemaker who loved taking care of her children and grandchildren. She loved people and would open her home to anyone in need. She played piano by ear and always kept a piano in the house. She was a Den Mother of Pack 272; president for the People's Day at Hutchins Jr High School, director of Union Grace Baptist Church Choir on 12th street.
Willie Alice became a license minister and pastor of the Rising Saints in God Church #5 in 1971 for eight years. In later years, Willie Alice learned to speak Spanish and counsel children, grandchildren and friends. She was also noted for her ability to recite the entire multiplication table until the age of 81 years old. In her later years, she always maintained her soft-spoken kind words and loving directions; but most of all, she maintained her spiritual strength.
Willie Alice was preceded in death by her husband, James Sr, and one son, Alton Bruce.
Willie Alice leaves to mourn, but yet rejoice in her Homegoing; one son, James L. Lewis, Jr. (Geraldine); three daughters, Carolyn Jean Darden (Jerome), Gwendoly Neal, and Dr Beverly Lewis-Johnson; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
